Weekly Five: Best celebrity couples

162

Although we hate to admit it, we all follow celebrity couples. We might not be super fans, but we all know their names and a bit too much about their personal lives. We are fascinated by them because we secretly root for stars to fall in love and stay in love off the screen. Many have tried and failed, but a few celebrity couples are going strong.

1. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, or “Brangelina”

These two are the ultimate powerhouse couple. Between them, they have over 50 charities, and their combined foundation gives millions of dollars a year to causes to improve international health, decrease poverty and preserve the environment. Jolie has won peace prizes from the UN, lobbied Congress multiple times and is a goodwill ambassador to Cambodia, for heaven’s sake. Not to mention Pitt’s award-winning acting and producing career.

Liz Chandia, an anthropology major from Elk Ridge, said she is a big fan of this couple because they compliment each other well.

“I am pro Brangelina,” Chandia said. “I like how they adopted a lot of kids and support one another.”

2. Beyonce and Jay-Z

The queen of pop married one of the most valuable producers in the world — it’s almost too much for one brain to take in. Practically no one is more well known in the international music world than Beyonce, taking the charts with hits like “Single Ladies,” but Jay-Z is not too out of his league here. Winning 17 Grammy Awards, he is both a successful rapper and producer. The two artists make a music dream couple. But what’s with the unique name choice for their daughter, “Blue Ivy”?

Ashley Allen, a sociology major from Cedar Hills, said Jay-Z is pretty cool, but Beyonce is just the best.

“I think they are a power couple,” Allen said. “So they can name their kid whatever the heck they want to.”

3. David and Victoria Beckham

Arguably the most beautiful celebrity couple in existence, the Beckhams won the award for the perfect married couple from Wedding TV. Victoria is a member of the Spice Girls, and David is one of the most valuable soccer players in the world. David obviously followed the advice of “Wannabe,” and got with her friends. After 14 years of marriage, these two have four kids and seem to be happy as ever.

4. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith

After 15 years of marriage, the Smiths are rock solid. Plus, they have two famous kids, so really this is the ultimate celebrity family. Their daughter Willow just keeps whipping her hair back and forth, while their son Jaden practices karate with Jackie Chan.

5. Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson

If nothing else, these two take the award for having been married the longest. This year they celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary and seem to be going strong. Tom Hanks is one of the most beloved actors in Hollywood, and after receiving his second Oscar for best actor, he romantically dedicated his performances to his loving wife.

There is only one factor in determining the validity of celebrity couples according to Clayton Conley, an economics major from Provo.

“Celebrity couples are only relevant when they have a good celebrity couple name,” Conley said.

Even if you rarely follow celebrity gossip, these couples stand out because they are examples that love and fame can work together. What is our fascination with them? They are a romantic movie come to life.
