The Universe’s ‘Day in the Life of BYU’ project moves to contest phase

The photo gallery for The Universe’s most recent “A Day in the Life of BYU” event is complete with the first of several winners announced in a contest associated with the project.

The gallery is posted at universe.byu.edu and contains more than 180 photos taken by members of the BYU community between midnight and midnight on Sept. 21. This is the second “Day in the Life” project The Universe has sponsored in the past year. The event was designed to give The Universe an additional way to interact with its audience while providing views of life at BYU that may not otherwise be seen in The Universe’s news pages or online.

Emily Kwok, a freshman from Orem, won an iPad mini from The Universe in a random participation drawing. She said she saw a promotion for the event, held on the day of the BYU/Utah football game, in the print edition of The Universe.

Kwok said it was raining really hard while she was deciding what photo to enter. The picture she submitted to the project shows her pretending to hold hands with a life-size poster in the Harold B. Lee Library. All photos for the project were submitted using social media, and Kwok’s photo was entered by posting it on Instagram with the contest hashtag #byuday2.

The next step in The Universe’s contest allows readers to nominate a single photo they believe is the best in the gallery. Judges from The Universe staff will make a final pick from the nominations and choose a winner, who will also win an iPad mini. Nominations should be submitted by email to and identify the photo by its URL. The deadline for submitting nominations is Tuesday, Oct. 8.

Losee Jewelers will choose three photos it deems “most memorable” and award a memory bead bracelet to each of those selected. Three $25 BYU Bookstore gift cards will be awarded to photos judged “most unique,” “funniest” and “crowd favorite.”

Last year’s A “Day in the Life of BYU” project was held Nov. 9 and received a best promotion award by The National Newspaper Association.
