Cougar soccer runs all over Aggies.

The BYU Men’s Soccer team started the match with their foot on the gas pedal and never backed off, beating the Utah State Aggies 6-1 on Sept 20.

In the Cougars’ first of four fall exhibition games, the team was determined to send a message in the early moments of play. In the third minute on a free kick by Jace Green, Blake Frischknecht headed a ball into the back of the net.

Not much later, Gareet Gee flew past the Aggie defenders on a breakaway and scored an easy goal in the eighth minute.

“When I got to half field, I was equal with everyone; when I got to the ball, I was maybe 10 yards ahead of everyone,” said Gee. “From there on I was able to play it into the goal.”

Frischknecht decided that he wasn’t done for the night when he weaved his way through a pack of defenders and scored his second goal of the night in the 26th minute. He played outstanding in the game despite the fact he has a heart condition and is recently coming off heart surgery.

“I had heart surgery about a year and a half ago,” said Frischnecht. “It felt pretty good tonight… but I’ve gotta get in better shape.”

Just two months ago, Frischknecht graduated from high school.  He is only 18 years old and it appears he has a promising future with the Cougars.

“Blake is now showing to be an extremely big threat. Every time he gets the ball, he’s dangerous,” assistant coach Brand Gilliam said. “We will continue to mold him, build him and give him as much confidence as he wants.”

The Cougars finished the match with six goals from a variety of players.

“We lost a lot players over the summer till now, to be able to play that many players shows that we have great depth,” Gilliam said.

Burt Sainsburry ended up scoring the Aggie’s only goal in the 86th minute.

The team’s next games is their annual BYU Alumni game on October 11.
