BYU’s stand-up comedy group Humor U is looking for new talent to keep students and members of the community laughing. An open mic night to find comedians will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Maeser Building auditorium.
The event draws a large crowd every year, as many aspiring comedians and daters alike find the event an appealing way to spend a mid-week evening. Steven Rowe, a media arts major and president of Humor U, anticipates a big turnout for the event.
“We performed at the New Student Orientation and created a lot of buzz, so we expect a lot of students to come from that,” Rowe said. “This is the opportunity for people who are not in the club yet to join or have a place to show off their skills to come and perform for a few minutes. It’s also where we scout talent.”
Humor U hopefuls find the event a fun time to get on stage and show off their skills regardless of their experience. Gabriela Palacios, a political science student from Dallas, describes her past open mic experience as an added edge against competition.
“The first time I did an open mic, I was nervous, but now I feel like I have some good material,” Palacios said. “I’ve gotten some really good tips from the Humor U members.”
With such momentum building behind Humor U stand-up comedy, BYU students can look forward to the open mic night bringing new talent and, as always, endless laughs.
Those looking to perform in the open mic night can find a list of rules and instructions on the Humor U Facebook page regarding the event.
