Syria’s foreign minister confirms that President Assad has accepted Russia’s proposal to take Syria’s chemical weapons in an effort to deter US military aggression.

Negotiation details are being made and will be presented soon, said Sergei Lavrov, Russian foreign minister. The plan will put chemical weapons in international control, said Russian officials. Syria’s foreign minister said the proposal was accepted in an effort to “derail American aggression.”

The Russian-Syrian agreement potentially alters President Obama’s address to Congress Tuesday night, where he is expected to propose a military strike on Syria. In the last 24 hours President Obama has agreed to consider a more diplomatic approach due to the pending Russian proposal.
