Online tools for LDS church members

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been making strides to use the Internet as a missionary tool, however its online presence has much to offer the members as well.

In his series finale on the Church’s digital resources, Fernando V. Camilo walked through some of the less-known and under-utilized tools on LDS.org, including an online music player, leadership training videos and the Mormon Channel.

Camilo spent the hour answering questions and giving a quick run-through of these resources, but encouraged class members to spend time exploring each tool on their own.

“You can spend hours here,” he said, after going through the music section of LDS.org, which, in addition to the music player, includes free downloads of member-submitted music.

LDS.org also provides leadership training videos for church callings, which, according to Camilo, are particularly under-utilized.

“If you’ve been called to a new calling, this is a good place to get started,” he said. “Or, if you are a bishop or a Sunday School President… this is a great place to go.”

Camilo continued listing resources on LDS.org and demonstrating how to best use them, answering any questions from the audience as he went. He made sure to go over tools for callings, but also emphasized the resources for personal uplift like the Mormon Channel.

The Mormon Channel includes videos from the “I’m a Mormon” campaign and CES Firesides, but it also includes less-known series like “The District,” a documentary about missionaries in the field, and “Conversations” which are interviews with well-known members of the Church.

Also included on The Mormon Channel, which is available online or as an app for smartphones and tablets, are 24-hour radio stations streaming music, podcasts and talks.

Throughout his presentation, Camilo reiterated that each member should explore the site on their own in order to fully learn what is available online.

“Find the resource that is right for you,” he said. “I hope that you take these things and go learn it.”
