Provo hosts free outdoor movies during August

August means two things for BYU students studying during summer term: Classes are wrapping up and heat waves are ramping up. Students seeking an affordable way to enjoy time cooling down from intense heat and intense studying during the break between summer term and fall semester may want to look into the free outdoor movies featured as part of Provo’s Movies in the Park events.

Provo officials plan to show movies for free on a 25-foot, inflatable screen at Rock Canyon Park during the Movies in the Park events, which take place every Monday from now until the end of August. This marks the eighth consecutive year that Provo has held the event, which Provo City holds as a public service for citizens of Provo.

The event isn’t exclusive to Provo residents though. Many people from surrounding areas attend the event each year. Husband and wife Kyle and Andrea Koon from Orem have attended the event at least once each summer since 2011. The Koons said that the free outdoor movies have been a fun activity for the couple.

“(Provo’s Movies in the Park) have been fun nights out for us for the last three years,” said Kyle Koon. “We love movies and you just can’t beat the price on these.”

Andrea Koon said she sees the movies as an affordable way for the couple to get away and relax.

“(Movies in the Park) have been an easy way for us to relax before the school year really starts going again,” said Andrea Koon. “They’ve been a good breather for us between the busy work and school schedules of the rest of the year.”

Provo will host the Movies in the Park events every Monday throughout August at Rock Canyon Park, located at 2620 N. 1200 E. in Provo. Movies will start at about 9 p.m., or as soon as the sky is dark enough for the movie to be fairly visible when projected onto the 25-foot screen.

Other attractions like “Just Dance Wii” will be available to entertain guests who arrive before the movies start. A small number of concessions will be available for purchase at the event, and event planners recommend that attendees consider bringing chairs, blankets and bug spray for the most comfortable experience.
