STOCKTON, Calif- BYU lost to San Diego for the second night in a row and fifth time this season, ending their conference tournament title hopes.

“At some point you have to say San Diego is better than us,” BYU coach Mike Littlewood said. “We need to get our program better so we can beat them five times. We didn’t play our cleanest game, didn’t execute, didn’t play defense and didn’t get the key hits.”

The Toreros scored three runs in the fourth to take control of the game, highlighted by a home run from All-American Kris Bryant. The Cougars battled back in the seventh on home runs from Jaycob Brugman and Kelton Caldwell to cut the deficit to 4-3. The Toreros scored twice in the eighth and once in the ninth to preserve the victory.

The Cougars are hoping to get an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament and will await word from Monday’s selection show.
