BYU baseball drops tourney opener

BYU baseball lost 9-8 to the San Diego Toreros on a walk-off RBI single by Austin Bailey in the tenth inning.

The game was tied at 8 heading into the tenth inning. The Cougars failed to score in the top half and the Toreros capitalized. Kris Bryant led off with a single, Dillon Checkal walked to put runners on first and second, and Bailey’s single scored Bryant to secure the victory.

BYU held an early 3-2 lead highlighted by a two-run home run by catcher Bret Lopez, when San Diego used a six-run sixth inning to take a commanding 8-3 lead. Dillon Haupt’s grand slam highlighted the scoring for the Toreros in the inning.

The Cougars wasted no time battling back, scoring five runs in the seventh to tie the game at 8. Adam Law and Dakota Hernandez both had RBI singles and Jaycob Brugman and Kelton Caldwell each had an RBI double. The teams failed to score in the next two innings until Bailey’s game-winning hit.

BYU will play Friday at noon PST against Gonzaga in a loser-out game. San Diego enters the winners bracket and will play San Francisco at 3:30 p.m. PT. The winner of the first game will play the loser of the second game Friday night for a spot in the championship on Saturday.
