Update

The 22-year-old man who caught on fire near a dumpster at 7 Eleven on Columbia St. died at 5:32 a.m. last Wednesday.

Sean Ryan Romero had burns covering 80 to 90 percent of his body. Romero caught on fire when a dumpster fire spread to him.

According to Lt. Siufanua, Provo Police Public Information Officer, “He was running down the street on fire, his clothes had burned up and he was completely naked dancing around and screaming. People were trying to put him out with fire extinguishers.”

A surveillance camera captured the gruesome scene and showed burned clothing surrounding the area, confirming witnesses’ statements about the horror of Romero’s tragic and ultimately fatal burning.

Romero was life-flighted to the University of Utah burn unit, where he died of complications.

Lt. Siufanua was unsure if the fire was set intentionally or accidentally, explaining that the case was still under investigation.
