BYU rugby starts its season with a battle against the University of Utah in the Red Rock Rugby Invitational in Mesquite, Nev., this weekend.

The University of Utah hosted this same tournament in St. George for about ten years, but the Utah Collegiate Rugby Conference has adopted it. The Conference started in August and includes 10 teams in Utah, Idaho and Nevada. Commissioner Bill Ungricht enthusiastically shared that the start of this new conference is the start of the growth of Utah rugby.

The Red Rock Rugby Invitational kicks off Friday with four games including the rival game between BYU and Utah.

“The University of Utah and BYU game is always a good one, so I am looking forward to that game,” Ungricht said.

BYU Rugby will face the University of Utah at least two more times this season.

“This will be a great opportunity for us to see how they are this season,” BYU Head Coach David Smyth said.

BYU will play two more games on Saturday against Idaho State University and Weber State University.

The Invitational starts at 2:00 p.m. PST Friday at the Mesquite Sports and Event complex. Admission is free to all.
