BYU adds top linebacker recruit

Johnny Ragin III, a top linebacker recruit from Oregon, has verbally committed to play football with Brigham Young University.

Ragin III announced his commitment through his Twitter account last night, an announcement that was reported through several media outlets afterwards.

Ragin III drew the attention of BYU assistant coaches early in his career, and chose to play for the Cougars after receiving offers from the Colorado, California and Oregon State.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound linebacker has drawn comparisons to current BYU linebacker Kyle Van Noy, who had a banner season for the Cougars.

“A lot of people have compared me with Van Noy and he’s obviously a great player, but I don’t want to be the next Kyle Van Noy — I want to be the next Johnny Ragin,” Ragin III said in an interview with the Deseret News. “I’ll obviously do well watching and learning everything I can from him while I’m at BYU and I admire him and his abilities, but I want to be my own player.”
