It took a few minutes for the Cougars to get going, but once Brandon Davies and the rest of the basketball team started rolling, there was no stopping them.
BYU beat SE Oklahoma State by a final score of 103-57. This is the second 100-plus performance from BYU in the last seven seasons.
Senior Brandon Davies led the way with 25 points in 18 short minutes. He enjoyed finally being able to play another team.
'It's nice to beat up on someone else for a change,' Davies said after the game.
SE Oklahoma State experienced a short-lived lead two minutes in, up 6-4, but then BYU put together a couple scoring streaks and defensive stops and the Cougars would never trail again.
The most exciting play of the night came right before halftime. After a Tyler Haws steal, freshman guard Cory Calvert threw an alley-oop to Davies who threw in a one-handed dunk while being fouled.
BYU's largest lead of the first half was by 29 points and the team went into the locker room up 50-25.
All BYU players who saw action Friday scored. Brock Zylstra added 17 points and Tyler Haws put in 15.
In post-game comments, Zylstra referred to Coach Mark Pope's challenge to shooting 54,000 shots over the summer as something he feels the team is benefiting from.
'When you shoot that many times, you feel like you deserve to make shots,' Zylstra said.
The team shot 51 percent from the field and 44 percent from the 3-point line.
Along with good shooting, the Cougars shared the ball well. Matt Carlino led the team in assists with eight.
Despite the changes to the team and the Marriott Center over the offseason, Coach Dave Rose was pleased.
'It felt really good,' Rose said. 'Our students were terrific for an early season exhibition game, and I'm really excited for our guys.'
Rose was especially excited to see four new guys receive a lot of playing time.
Raul Delgado had three 3-pointers on the night and Agustin Ambrosino led the team with 8 rebounds.
Sophomore guard Anson Winder, who saw playing time last year, was held out of play due to a sore ankle. Rose said the ankle was going to be further evaluated this weekend and Winder's status would be known better next week.
The Cougars second exhibition game will be Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. against Findlay.
