Candy and costumes are both fun Halloween traditions, but BYUSA is taking the fun to the next level with its Spooky Sprint 5K this Saturday.
Among all the Halloween races this year, BYUSA provides an opportunity closer to campus and lighter on the wallet. Registration is $7 with a BYU ID and $10 without. Individuals can also register the day of the race for $10 starting at 8 a.m. The race begins this Saturday, Oct. 27, at 9 a.m. by the Richards building. Runners will circle BYU campus dressed in Halloween costumes, and there will be prizes for the best costumes and the fastest runners.

The Honor 5K has existed since 1990 and happens to provide students with a fun way to remember the Honor Code. With this year’s new name and theme, students get to celebrate Halloween along with the Honor Code.

“The purpose is to provide a fun and exciting activity for the students that encourages commitment to the Honor Code,” Crandall said. “We would like for each runner to feel like they are a part of the BYU community, have a greater reverence for the Honor Code, and have an enjoyable time. It’s also going to be a great way to cut some calories before loading up on Halloween candy.”

Rob Driggs, BYUSA executive director, described the “Spooky Sprint” in two words — fun run.

“It is meant to help students have fun, exercise and feel the Halloween spirit,” Driggs said. “It’s a great chance to run with your friends and have a good laugh.”

Driggs also said free t-shirts will be given to the first 250 people who register, and there are still t-shirts available.

Sarah Herzig, a freshman from Houston, is helping to organize the event and said it will be a fun way to celebrate Halloween a little early.

“It’s a worthwhile thing to do on your weekend to celebrate Halloween,” she said. “I’m personally excited to see everyone’s costumes.”

More information about the event can be found on the event Facebook page. Students can register for the event on runnercard.com.
