The BYU women’s soccer team pushed their winning streak to seven Thursday with a 1-0 win against in-state rival Utah State.
The lone score for the Cougars came from senior defender Dana Oldroyd Cusick on a deep shot in the ninth minute, her second goal this year.
Following the early goal, the Cougars buckled down on defense only allowing a total of seven shots all game.
“Our whole team and especially our back four do a great job of not giving up easy shots,” coach Jennifer Rockwood said.
BYU’s stellar defense has now given up an astoundingly low four goals in their last nine games, while the offense has recorded double digit shots in each of those games.
The loss knocks a good Utah State team to 6-2-3 on the year with a recent tie at home against No. 23 Washington.
“People don’t know how difficult in-state rivalry games are,” Rockwood said. “Utah State has great players and is well coached, but we got off to a great start and moved the ball well. Anytime you can win on the road it’s a great thing.”
The Cougars are now 9-1 heading into Monday evening’s game against Oregon. The Cougars and Ducks kickoff at 7 p.m. PST at the University of Oregon.
