When a magician visited Theron Christensen’s school when he was eight years old, he had no idea how the tricks would impact his life.
“I wanted to figure out how it was done and then got addicted,” Christensen said, a freshman pre-communication major from Vernal.
After studying magic for ten years, Christensen ended up center stage last Wednesday night when he wowed the crowd at the annual BYU’s Got Talent event. He was one of twelve acts that comprised the first show of the season. The crowd was hooked on Christensen’s rope tricks, which showed expertise in slight of hand.
After Christensen’s act, Karr exclaimed, “That was voodoo magic!”
“You had some super delicious melodies,” Call said after a ukileilie solo by Sandra Kennelly.
A nine person band called “Vintage Lion” won first place through audience vote on Wednesday night. The band, comprised of seven band members and two backup singers, uses a wide variety of instruments to channel a 1950’s vibe and use vintage suits and brass instruments.
The winners from Wednesday’s show will perform again in the BYU’s Got Talent finale in December with the winners of the respective October and November shows. Wildcard acts chosen by the Student Activities Board will also have the chance to compete. All shows are free admission and many attendees of Wednesday’s show said they would recommend the event to everyone.
Brandan Willmore, a freshman political science major from St. Anthony, Idaho said, “I’ve never been before but I’ll definitely come again. There are a lot of people wandering around campus with talents you’d never know about.”
The next installments of this season’s BYU’s Got Talent will be on October 17 and November 14 and the finale show will be on December 5. All shows will be in the Varsity Theater located in the Wilkinson Student Center.
All of the winners of the shows are chosen by audience vote, so come and choose who BYU’s most talented act will be.
