BYUSA focus group looks at homeless ‘gap’ on Friday

Some BYU students experience a housing gap between Summer and Fall housing contracts. BYUSA is holding the first of multiple focus groups Friday, Sept. 14, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. to hear students’ experiences and talk about a solution to the problem.

All students are invited to participate in the focus group and can sign up by clicking here. The input from the students and the other research done will be presented to the off-campus housing office to begin collaborative, solution-oriented discussions. The success of this initiative depends on the participation and feedback from students.

“We need to have the students’ support and input,” said Jessica Godfrey, BYUSA Executive Vice President. “We would like to get as much information as we can in order to address the issue.”

If students cannot attend the focus group, they are invited to assist in other ways. Students can voice their opinions through submitting this form. Students who are also interested in participating in the research process can sign up to help by clicking here.

“We want to get an accurate understanding of the student’s opinion on the homeless period,” said Brandon Hatch, BYUSA president. “We want to know how it’s affecting them and how it could best be resolved.”

The leadership and members of BYUSA are doing what they can to advocate for change that is actually affecting students. Godfrey said she is not sure what change they will actually be able to make, but they are going to do their best.

“Our goal is to address the gap between summer and fall semesters when students who change housing contracts do not have a place to live.” she said. “With the research and data we collect, we will develop a specific plan and suggest a system of uniformity to BYU Off-Campus Housing.”

Hatch said that BYUSA will do its best to represent BYU students in this issue.

“As representatives of the students, we have responsibilities to address issues that affect the students,” Hatch said. “We want to do anything we can to advocate for change that will positively affect the BYU experience. I encourage anyone who feels affected by this to get involved with it. We want the voice of those who need it to be heard.”
