Snowbird offers summer activities for all ages

Summer is on its way, and the warm weather provides opportunities to spend more time outside. Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort offers a variety of activities for those looking for some fun in the sun.

Located in Little Cotton Wood Canyon, Snowbird provides great mountain backdrop.

'It's a really great mountain getaway and there's something for everyone,' said Emily Moench, Snowbird communications manager.

Snowbird introduced a new ride this summer, the Mountain Flyer. According to the Snowbird website, the 'ride is accessed from the base of Chickadee and brings riders up to the launch point.'  From there the riders fly 1000 feet down the mountain. The Mountain Flyer seats two people at a time.

The aerial tram takes passengers up 2900 feet to the top of Hidden Peak. Riders can take the tram back down on its return journey, or they can use hiking and mountain biking trails.

The Peruvian Chair Lift also takes its riders up the mountain to Mineral Basin. Tours on ATVs and horseback originate from this location. Chair lift and tram tickets are interchangeable, so it is possible to take one up the mountain and the other on the way down.

Spencer McCoy, a 22-year-old freshman from Farmington,  has fond memories of his time at a Snowbird, the Alpine Slide being one of his favorite activities.

'I squealed like a little school girl,' McCoy said. 'I enjoyed it quite a bit.'

Other activities at Snowbird include rock climbing, fly fishing, panning for gold and riding a mechanical bull named Black Jack.

Snowbird offers more than daytime activities. On Friday nights Snowbird presents Family Flicks, free showings of favorite 80s and 90s movies. Movies are shown on the Plaza Deck and start at dusk. Movie-goers are allowed to bring snacks and coolers. Friday's movie is 'The Goonies.'

The Plaza Deck will also host the Cool Air Concert Series on Saturday nights. Concerts start at 6 p.m. and coolers are allowed. The Chicago Afro Project will be playing this weekend.

See the Snowbird website for activity details and ticket prices.
