The BYU men’s soccer team returned home from its California road trip the weekend with a 1-1 record.

The Cougars shut out the Pali Blues on Friday night for their first division win of the season. Goals by David Gates and Colby Bauer secured a 2-0 victory for the team and avenged a loss to the Blues in California last year.

“It was a great win for us, our guys fought really hard on the road and to win by a couple goals is a great result,” BYU Head Coach Chris Watkins said. “I couldn’t be prouder.”

BYU took that momentum into its game in Southern California the next night hoping to avenge last season’s loss to the Seahorses as well.

Jace Green scored in the first half to give the Cougars an early lead, but a strong second-half performance from the Seahorse offense gave Southern California a 2-1 edge. Though the Cougars continued to pressure the defense and take shots, they were unable to post another goal and were handed their first loss of the season. BYU’s record now stands at 5-1-4 on the season.

The Cougars will face the division’s leading offense Tuesday night when they play FC Tucson in Provo. The game was initially announced as having an 8 p.m. kick-off time, but was moved forward. The game will now begin at 7 p.m. at South Field.
