Letter: Pedestrian Safety

132

The March 28 Police Beat reported a female pedestrian was struck by a garbage truck. Luckily she was not seriously injured, but this highlights a problem I have tried to bring to the attention of BYU Police. Simply put, East Campus Drive has a lot of pedestrian and vehicle traffic, and an increase in police presence there could dramatically increase pedestrian safety. I see drivers blatantly running red lights all the time, but never is an officer on hand to rein them in. My complaints to BYU Police have been met with empty promises of increased activity, but I have noticed no improvement in the situation. The recent accident attests to the very real and present hazards. I implore the powers that be to stop paying lip service to safety and start ticketing dangerous drivers before someone is seriously hurt.
