Police Beat: Stolen artwork returned to BYU

Suspicious Activity

Jan. 6 – A suspicious-looking man wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt was found loitering by a woman’s car in Wymount Terrace. Police responded but were unable to find the man.

Jan. 6 – A male suspect was found examining the locks on four bikes. The man was wearing a white hat, a white hooded-sweatshirt and a backpack. Police responded but found nobody.

Criminal Mischief

Jan. 7 – A group of men were playing a game of basketball in the Richards Building when one of the players became upset. He left the building but returned with a knife. The police responded to a call, but the man had left when officers arrived. The man is not believed to be a student since he was not wearing the facility wristband.

Jan. 9 – A loud explosion was heard in Helaman Halls, followed by a scream. Officers responded to the scene but found nothing.

Graffiti

Jan. 5 – Two light poles in the football practice field were found with black and yellow writing.

Theft

Jan. 4 – A student reported a stolen cello in the HFAC. The student realized he had put the cello in a different location, and the cello was found.

Jan. 5 – Somewhere between 1970-1985, a piece of art valued at $218,000 was stolen from BYU campus. After being stolen the “Silver Chalice” was sold between a number of different art dealers before finally landing in Switzerland with Count Thyssen-Bornemisz’s collection. BYU negotiated with Thyssen-Bornemisz’s estate and the piece of art was returned to BYU.

Jan. 9 – A visitor to campus reported her car stolen.

Jan. 10 – A woman reported a possible fraud case after sending her resume and personal information to an individual looking for a mother’s helper on KSL. The person then requested the woman to cash a check and then return $50 in cash or check.
