Cougars Finish 2-1 at Gaucho Invitational

The top-ranked Cougar men’s volleyball team competed this weekend with a 2-1 record in the Gaucho Invitational in Santa Barbara, Calif.

The Cougars defeated UC Santa Barbara on Saturday in three straight sets (26-24, 25-22, 25-19). Sophomore outside hitter Taylor Sander led the Cougars with 17 kills, followed closely by redshirt freshman Josue Rivera, who turned in 11 kills.

On Friday, the Cougars took on two top-ten opponents. They first met the second-ranked UC Irvine Anteaters in a highly anticipated preseason match. The Anteaters dealt BYU a 3-1 loss (21-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-23).

The Cougars then faced the tenth-ranked Loyola (Chicago) Ramblers. BYU defeated Loyola in five sets (20-25, 25-20, 25-16, 23-25, 15-11). Sander led the team with 28 kills.

The Cougars’ next match is this weekend in Irvine, Calif., where they will once again face the Anteaters. BYU will play on both Friday and Saturday nights at 7 p.m.

The team will then return to Provo on Jan. 20 for its home opener against USC.
