What to do in Utah Valley for the holidays

Whether it be plays, boat rides, Messiah sing-alongs, ballets, art exhibitions or lights, something is sure to tickle your fancy. Here’s a to-do list for those staying in Utah Valley for the holidays:

Spend time with Bob Cratchit, Mr. Scrooge and Tiny Tim at Hale Center Theater Orem to be reminded what the Christmas season is all about. “A Christmas Carol” will be performed through Dec. 23 with evening performances at 8 p.m. and Saturday matinees at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $16-$20.

The CLAS Ropes Course offers a Christmas cruise on the Provo River during the Christmas season.
Enjoy Christmas lights reflecting off the water while listening to Christmas music on the CLAS Ropes Course Christmas cruise. The boat ride runs every half hour starting at 6:30 p.m., Monday to Saturday through Dec. 26. Tickets are $8 per person.

Head to the Springville Museum of Art at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11, and hear the Utah Valley Handbell Ringers’ Sunday Concert Series. Free tickets can be picked up at the Springville Museum of Art during normal museum hours.

Watch Utah Regional Ballet perform Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker” at the Covey Center for the Arts Dec. 10 to 20. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. with matinees on Saturdays at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $16 to $26.

Warm up your singing voice for a Messiah sing-along with the Utah Lyric Opera. The sing-along will  feature the narrative “Hallelujah, Handel!” The free event will be at 7 p.m. on Dec. 12 at the Orem Public Library. Utah’s own writer and actress Elizabeth Hansen, Metropolitan Opera mezzo-soprano Ariel Bybee, other soloists and a chamber orchestra will perform.

Visit Holiday Central at Thanksgiving Point. Look at Electric Park’s twinkling holiday lights display, enjoy holiday classics by the Utah Symphony, listen to a cappella group Voice Male, watch ice sculpting demonstrations, shop for gifts at Emporium and eat at Harvest Restaurant.

Ice skate at Peaks Ice Arena with a date or with friends. Go on college night to play broomball.

“It’s good for all ages,” said Britanni Good, a junior studying broadcast journalism. “I went with my family when I was younger and it was a blast. Ice skating is a fun winter activity and Seven Peaks is nice because you can still be indoors.”

Public skate hours are available by calling 801-852-7465. It’s $5 per person and skate rental is $1.50. Broomball on college night is $4.

Cross country ski or snowshoe at Sundance during a full moon. The $15 fee covers equipment rental and use of the trails. Grab a headlamp and head up Dec. 10 or Dec. 12.

Take a tour of Spanish Fork’s Festival of Lights any night through Jan. 1 starting at 6 p.m. Listen to holiday music on 99.9 FM while you drive through. The cost is $5 per car.

View the 26th Annual Christmas Lamb exhibition at the Springville Museum of Art. The artwork reveals the spirit of Christmas from the viewpoint of young children. The event is free.

If there’s a desire to leave Utah Valley, see “Savior of the World” at the Conference Center, check out the Festival of Trees in Sandy or visit Temple Square to see the lights and take a carriage ride.
