Provo city is expanding its bicycle facilities master plan to enhance bicycle friendliness and make biking a viable transportation option.

Saffron Capson, public involvement manager, said in a news release, “This project represents a fresh look at Provo’s existing bicycle planning efforts and will direct the future of bicycle infrastructure, policy and programs in the city.”

This local cyclist is one of many who could benefit from Provo's master plan.
The project will evaluate current conditions for safe biking in Provo, identify bicycle transportation initiatives, develop priorities and identify possible funding sources. The plan is estimated to be complete in June 2012.

Alta Planning + Design is working on the project for the city.

“We’re identifying different routes for actual bicycle facilities, bike lanes and trails,” said Travis Jensen, project manager. “We’re also looking at city policy.”

They are looking at programs that can help educate people on how to bike safely and encourage them to do so. Jensen said the plan will benefit everybody from young to old.

“Provo has an opportunity to be a really bicycle-friendly city, and it’s exciting to be a part of that,” Jensen said.

In the meantime, Provo city is trying to promote public participation in the planning process.

“The project team is seeking input from cyclists and non-cyclists alike,” according to a news release. It wants to know why people do or don’t bike, as well as locations where people would like to bike, but can’t currently.

The public is invited to attend an open house today from 4:30 to 7 p.m. in the Provo City Library Ballroom, 550 N. University Ave. Citizens will be able to give feedback to the project team during interactive presentations at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

“The purpose is for people to come and give us their ideas for what they want us to do,” Jensen said. “We’re letting them say what they want us to do and what their priorities are.”

Attendees will be given voting devices and real-time polling results will be displayed.

“It’s a good opportunity for people to come and give their opinion on things,” Jensen said.
