It wasn’t a blowout, but it was enough to get the job done.

The BYU’s women’s basketball team played this season’s first away game Monday night against University of Tulsa and won 64-61.

Senior Haley Steed conquered the board, scoring 24 points, including six 3-pointers, and a perfect record of made free throws. In fact, it was Steed’s 3-pointer with 10 seconds left on the clock that won the game for the Cougars.

In the first game since the Cougars lost to Duke last Friday, BYU, who only lost to the No. 8 ranked Blue Devils by six, was determined not to overlook any team.

It was a night full of  career-highs. Not only did Steed tie her high in points, but freshman Stephanie Rovetti made her college breakthrough with a career-high of 12 points. Senior Kristen Riley also had a career-high 12 rebounds.

But even with all of the highs, Steed said the team needs to play stronger and work on their composure and not let big leads slip away.

Tulsa battled hard, and two of their players had double-digit points: Taleya Mayberry with 11 and Taylor Hooker with 16.

Up next for BYU is Kansas State in Manhattan, Kan.; a formidable opponent who hasn’t lost a game so far this season. In the Wildcats first official season game against Dartmouth, they won 54-20.

Though Kansas State didn’t make the AP Top 25 Preseason Poll, they did manage to pull 16 votes in an attempt to make the rankings.

Wildcats head coach Deb Patterson enters her 16th season. She has had 300 wins at Kansas State and seven former players in the WNBA.

The Cougars face the Wildcats Wednesday, Nov. 16th, at 6 p.m. MST.
