Return of the flare

A top choice on Santa’s wish list this year will be jeans because the flare is making a comeback in a big way.

The term flare refers to an extra-wide bottom opening on a pair of jeans. This two-inch difference around the ankle will be the reason many fashion conscious people will make the yearly pilgrimage to the mall yet again.

Diane Williams, 25, from Provo, and a manager at the University Mall Buckle store, said it’s her job to know what is coming and going in women’s fashion. In her opinion, the flair has been resurrected.

“The flare is definitely making a comeback,” she said. “People only stopped wearing them for like a year. But they are coming back even harder. We are expecting this to be a top seller for our store this upcoming Christmas season.”

The trend has changed again. First wider was cooler, then skinny was hotter and now its back to the future all over again.

Brittany Tennant, a sophomore biology major from Dallas, wasn’t aware of the trend but was unknowingly prepared.

“Good thing I kept all of my old jeans,” she said. “I’m glad the flare is coming back because I like wearing them a lot. But I don’t like the idea that the skinny jeans I just bought won’t be in style in like a month. It’s annoying that fashion changes so fast.”

Naturally, style is constantly changing.

Jonathan Blomquist a junior business major from Phoenix, said he thinks he has it all figured out.

“Whatever is strange or weird today will be cool in six months,” he said. “The extreme will eventually move to the center.”

But while he recognizes a widening of options, he is not happy about it.

“It is upsetting that we are going backwards with our fashion sense,” he said. “Guys fashion follows girls fashion a lot of the time so I’m not looking forward to wearing bell bottoms again. Girls look better in skinny jeans.”

No matter what Blomquist thinks he knows about women’s fashion, other people disagree.

According to Williams, women should be happy about the flare because it makes one appear thinner.

“This is good news for ladies because a wider bottom opening is more flattering. It really slims you out,” she said.
