Women’s golf heads to Las Vegas

The women’s golf team begins competition in the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown today.

The tournament is composed of three rounds and runs today until Wednesday.

There are 16 teams competing in the tournament, including No. 23 UC Davis.

Sophomore Annika Afoa said she is excited to see how the team performs after a hard defeat at its last tournament.

“I am excited for us to come back better than when we were defeated,” Afoa said. “I think we will be able to play well and beat some good teams.”

The other golfers competing for the Cougars are senior Ashley Malasaka, junior Maggie Yuan, sophomore Amanda Keith and freshmen Lauren Atkinson and Maria Yacaman.

Afoa said the challenge of this tournament will be for each player to put up good scores throughout each round.

“We need to come up with good scores,” Afoa said. “We need to play well through all rounds to do well in this tournament.”

Afoa also said the team has played in this tournament before — and played well — so she believes they can repeat that.

“We played this tournament before and placed second,” Afoa said. “We know the course and we should be able to play really well.”

The players tee off this morning, and fans can follow live updates on www.golfstat.com.
