For the young children and the easily frightened, there are plenty of things to do in October besides going to haunted houses. This year Utah has a river trip, train ride, haunted village, carnivals and hayrides.

For a family-friendly scare, check out Heber Valley Railroad’s Haunted Canyon at Vivian Park in Provo Canyon. Take a train ride through the canyon and listen to Provo Canyon’s most haunting stories. It costs $16 for adults, $8 for children 12 and under.

Or for something different, take a riverboat ride down Provo River. Board at CLAS Ropes Course on west Center Street for a 25-minute Halloween cruise.

Nicole Rollins of Lehi was impressed with the ride last year and brought her children again this year.

Children will love the Halloween carnival put on by Provo City Special Events. Only $3 per person or $10 per family will let children enjoy magic shows, carnival games, crafts, a mad scientist lab, Peter Pan’s Neverland activity room and candy and prizes for everyone. The carnival will be at The Center in Provo on Oct. 28 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

A bit farther but just as fun is the pumpkin patch hayride at The Red Barn in Santaquin. Head to Rowley’s South Ridge Farms and take a hayride to pick out a pumpkin. Then stop in the barn for pumpkin pie, apple pie ice cream, fresh apple juice and apple cider slushies. Admission is $3 for adults, $2.50 for children under 8.

At the Haunted Village at This is the Place Heritage Park, visitors walk through haunted buildings and creepy houses.
