Tuesday

Greg Burton, a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, will speak at the weekly Devotional at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center. Burton’s address is titled “Lessons from Life’s Laboratory.”

Wednesday

BYU will present a faculty recital featuring impressionist works for the cello performed by Garrick Woods at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. The performance is free.

The 2011 BYU Law Fair will be in the WSC Ballroom from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will host representatives from more than 130 law schools.

Retired Brigadier General Amos A. Jordan will speak at 7:30 p.m. in the Hinckley Alumni and Visitors Center. His subject is “Has America Lost its Mojo? The Changing Nature of Power in the Contemporary World” and is sponsored by BYU’s Wheatley Institution. Admission is free.

The Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology will host its second annual Student Innovator of the Year competition Wednesday and Thursday. Student inventors from all areas of campus will compete for $10,000 in prize money. Events kick off Wednesday at noon in Brigham Square and will continue until 3 p.m.

Casey Poe, Critical Language Scholarship program director for the U.S. State Department, will present a lecture and conduct a workshop at the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies. He will address “Federal Programs and International Education: Money Well Spent in an Era of Fiscal Constraints?” at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark Building. At 3 p.m., he will conduct a workshop on “Critical Language Scholarships: Getting In and Out Successfully,” same room. Both events are free.

Thursday

This year’s Virginia Cutler Lecture sponsored by Family Home and Social Sciences and the School of Family Life will feature Dean Busby at 7 p.m. in 250 SWKT. Busby, a professor in the School of Family Life, will present a lecture titled “Are LDS Couples Really Different? Considering the Influence of Religion on Couple Attitudes, Behaviors and Outcomes.” The event is free.

Friday

The Museum of Peoples and Cultures has a story time for toddlers and preschoolers at 11 a.m.

Parents Week starts

Saturday

Run or walk in the Family and Alum 5K  through BYU’s campus, part of Parents Weekend. Check in at 7:15 a.m. The race begins at 8 a.m. Registration fee includes a T-shirt, post-race bagels, fruit and bottled water, awards to top finishers and raffle prizes. Pre-registration online: $15. Day of event registration: $20.

Monday

The Hinckley Institute of Politics at the University of Utah presents the 15th Annual Siciliano Forum, “The Future of Journalism,” held Oct. 24-28.

The “Education in Zion” exhibit offers family home evening tours every second and fourth Monday in the JFSB at 7 p.m.
