Montana Tech takes BYU to class

BYU’s hockey team fell to the Orediggers of Montana Tech 4-2 Saturday night, losing their seventh straight game of the season.

“We’re playing well enough to lose, and it is getting to be a little  frustrating,” said BYU coach Stan Weiss.

The Cougars rallied behind player of the game Taylor Barr, who made his first career start at goaltender for the season, but they weren’t able to take advantage of opportunities in front of the goal.

“We played to their strengths, shooting glove high at goal instead of down low by his legs, and they were quick to clear it to the boards,” said BYU forward Cam Hymas. “We just need to attack more as a team and get shots on goal when we are in their zone.”

Barr played well in his first game, replacing goaltender Jesse Welch this week. Welch left the team for personal reasons, which gave the freshman his first opportunity to mind the goal for the Cougars.

“He played his heart out, which is all that we could ask of him,” Hymas said.

The game was the first meeting between the teams, and the Cougars felt like it was a game they should have won.

“Instead of playing to our style, we kind of slowed down and played the way that they wanted us to,” said BYU forward Brendan Hubbard, who had the second goal of the game for the Cougars.

BYU outshot Montana Tech, and spent much of the game on the attack on the Oredigger side of the ice, but Weiss said his team needs to give a little more to find the means to win.

“It is going to take a little more determination, a little more heart, a little more character.,” he said. “Until we find that desire to win, and don’t accept defeat, we’re going to lose these close games. We just need to find something inside of each of us to get that victory.”

BYU hits the road for a weekend series against Boise State on Friday and Saturday.
