The BYU hockey team lost its homecoming games to Weber State this weekend, losing 5-3 Friday and 5-4 on Saturday.

“The losses are frustrating, but we have to believe we’ll turn it around soon,” BYU coach Stan Weiss said.

The games were competitive, and the Cougars kept it close until the closing minutes of each game. BYU out-shot Weber State in both games and had a physical presence in every period.

“Besides the scoreboard, we should have won that game,” captain Adam Farero said after the first game. “Everything went our way except for two bounces that ended up costing us the win.”

The Cougars showed resiliency during the first game, coming back to tie it during the second period with two goals, including one from forward Cam Hymas.

BYU also rode the fan support to strong defense on the power play, stopping Weber State on each opportunity the Wildcats had.

The team was grateful for the fan turnout over the weekend, with multiple players commenting on how much of an impact it has on the game.

“From a goalie’s perspective, there’s nothing better than to hear that collective mass take that deep breath in and then, ‘Yeaaah,’ it makes all the difference,” goaltender Jesse Welch said.

The team, despite the poor start to the season, feels like it is close to striking gold and finding success in the form of victories.

“Right now, we just lack some game maturity, the experience to make those breaks go our way, but I think we are so close to seeing how good this team can become,” Weiss said. “We just have to get the ball rolling.”

The Cougars’ next game is Saturday against Montana Tech. This will be the first matchup between the two teams.
