During the Saturday morning session of General Conference, President Thomas S. Monson announced the historic Provo Tabernacle, which was heavily damaged by fire in December of last year, will be rebuilt and converted into Provo’s second temple.

President Monson said the new temple will help meet the needs of members in the Provo area.

In a news release, the Church said since the 2010 fire, Church leaders have worked with architects and engineers to determine the future of the building. The Church has acquired additional property near the tabernacle in order to complete project which will include a full restoration of the original exterior.

The tabernacle, which was constructed from 1883 to 1898, will be the second historic tabernacle the Church has converted into a temple and the 16th temple for the state of Utah.
