General Conference (Saturday afternoon): Elder L. Tom Perry

184

Elder L. Tom Perry taught what members can do to respond to the increased attention The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is receiving around the world.

Some who hear about the Church may not understand it and have been taught to be suspicious, he said. This is the time to be examples of “goodness and virtue” to dispel the distortions of truth, he said.

As this is is done, “their suspicions will evaporate, negative stereotypes will disappear, and they will begin to understand the Church as it really is,” he said.

Members of the Church can be proactive in promoting a positive image more than ever, he said. Members must be “bold in [their] declarations of Jesus Christ . . . be righteous examples to others,” and “speak up about the Church,” Elder Perry said.

He emphasized the importance of engaging in two-way conversation and getting to know know co-workers and neighbors on a deeper level by listening to their questions.

“Always remember that it is better for them to ask than you to tell,” Elder Perry said.

He advised not to fear sharing the Gospel and praying to the Lord for guidance. As members of the Church “respond to invitations to share [their] beliefs and feelings about the restored Gospel . . .a spiritual love and spirit of courage will be [their] constant companion.”
