Students share memories of summer

Summer is winding down and students have made various memories to reflect on as they move into fall studies.

After the last final is done in April, many students break away for the summer. Some leave to do internships, some leave to take summer sales jobs, some enjoy the time away from campus, some stay and enjoy free time from school and others choose to stay and continue school.

Richard Wade, 24, studying marketing, loves the free time he gets away from school and enjoys different ways to cool off.

“The best part of my summer was traveling to Europe,” he said. “I love going to the snow cone shacks during the summer. It is so refreshing to have one when it is hot outside.”

When summer weather hits, there always seems to be something going on. Outdoor concerts, rock climbing, hiking or finding a way to cool off by going to the pool, Seven Peaks or boating.

Casey Rich, 21, from Buffalo, N.Y., stayed in Provo this summer to enjoy what Utah has to offer.

“My favorite part of this summer was going camping,” Rich said. “We had a good group with family and friends. I love the outdoors. Being able to sleep in in the summer is the best. There is usually no worries, and you can … roam around.”

For students who are out doing internships, it allows them an opportunity to network and get a feel for work in the business world. Students with internships get a different feel for summer than a student who stays local.

Some students will only get to enjoy a two-week break from summer if they decided to take classes spring and summer semesters. The advantages of going to school during summer is getting farther along in a major.

Michael Nielsen said he enjoys summertime, although he said it’s different now, than when he was in high school.

“Summer is a bit different now than when I was a teenager,” he said. “Back in high school, it was hanging out with friends and having a good time. Nothing really mattered back then. I love summer because it is all about making memories. Now it’s a great time to work for money for school.”
