A free outdoor showing of Disney Pixar’s 2009 box-office hit “Up” will be hosted by the BYU Student Leadership’s Events Management team in the SWKT quad tonight.

Events Specialist Travis Hancock, a senior from Beavercreek, Ohio, studying business strategy, invites all students and local families to come and make the most of summer.

“Provo summer nights are awesome,” Hancock said. “It’s the perfect setting plus there will be games, prizes and free ice cream. We’re even going to launch 100 free T-shirts.”

Games, including a water balloon toss, will begin at 8 p.m., with the movie beginning at dusk.

As wholesome as it is entertaining, “Up” throws together a crotchety old man, a rather rotund Boy Scout and a friendly dog into one adventure that was recognized at both the Academy Awards and Golden Globes for Best Animated Feature and Best Original score.

Hancock’s co-worker Melissa Mendenhall, 19, a sophomore from Springville, said she expects the event to be enjoyable.

“It’s a great movie, a great atmosphere and a great way to hang out with friends, even if you’ve only just met,” Mendenhall said. “It’s especially a great date activity because it’s fun and it’s free.”

Hancock and Mendenhall said they hope to see families and students of all ages at the showing, noting this is an excellent opportunity for BYU’s newest students to come and see what BYU is all about.

Ruby Higgins, a freshman from Monroe, Wash., said she will likely be among those in attendance.

“I’m excited,” Higgins said. “I really like outdoor movies because they kind of remind me of the 1950s drive-in movies. There aren’t very many of those left these days so it will be a unique experience.”
