Letter: To the bikers

118

I am in no way opposed to bicycles. I enjoy a good bike ride every now and then. However, I am extremely frustrated with bicyclists on campus.

Apparently I am the only person familiar with bicycle regulation that states “Do not ride on sidewalks during class breaks.”

Not a day goes by where I do not see this rule broken.

Strangely, I seem to be a bike magnet. On numerous occasions a biker has whipped past me while I was walking to my next class, leaving me struggling with my mortality when I should be struggling with understanding the lecture.

The worst instance was a few weeks ago when I was walking in a stretch between the Eyring Science Center and the JFSB notorious for being crowded during class breaks.

Some stubborn biker decided to ride in the sea of people and nearly fell off when he realized at the last second he was about to crash into me. Afterward he tried to make it seem like it was my fault for not jumping out of the way when I was already squashed between other lawful pedestrians.

I would implore all bicyclists to do better at observing this rule for all who seem to find themselves in front of your treads a bit too often.

It can’t hurt to get off your bicycle (and possibly high horse) for 10 minutes for the safety of everyone else.
