A date night with anthropological twists

A night of clay, mummies and a cheap date are up for grabs at BYU’s Museum of Peoples and Cultures.

The museum is offering it’s first “Culture-Me-Mine” event that features its newest exhibition, “Entwined: A Vibrant Heritage of the Modern Maya.” The date night will begin at 7 p.m. on June 17 and will include activities such as a tour of the new exhibition and a tour of “Beneath Your Feet: Discovering the Archaeology of Utah Valley,” a game of “Couple Feud” and scavenger hunt and a couples sculpture-making contest, according to a news release.

The “Culture Me Mine” event happens every semester, according to Debbie Smith, program coordinator for the education department for the museum.

“[Culture Me Mine] helps individuals have an inexpensive date,” Smith said. “Especially for couples who just started dating or it is their first date, to help break the ice and find out more about each other.”

The event is full of culture and is like a big group activity, according to Smith.

“Each session of Culture-Me-Mine has its own atmosphere,” said Anna McKean, promotions manager at the museum. “And it’s always a lot of fun.”

The Museum of Peoples and Cultures is BYU’s museum of archeology and ethnology. Most of the collections come from South America, Mesoamerica, Central America, the American Southwest, the Great Basin and Polynesia, according to the museum’s website.

“The museum itself is interesting,” said Susan Guest, a nursing graduate. “It is an easy way to add some culture to a date.”
There are 12 tickets to the event, one couple per ticket, according to Smith.

“We usually get all of our tickets sold,” Smith said. “We can [also] accept walk-ins if all tickets are sold.”

Tickets for Culture-Me-Mine are $10 a couple and will be available for purchase at the Wilkinson Student Center Information Desk. Light refreshments will be provided. The Museum of Peoples and Cultures is at 100 E. 700 North in Provo.

“It’s nice to do something different every once in a while,” Guest said.
