For the first time since 1997, BYU will kick off the season ranked among the nation’s top-25 programs. According to The Sporting News College Football Yearbook, the Cougars will enter the 2007 campaign ranked 25th.

“We appreciate and acknowledge the recognition and see this as another positive step for our program,” BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall said. “We look forward to the opportunity of competing this season and doing so at a level that is representative of one of the top teams in the country.”

BYU finished the 2006 season ranked as high as No. 15 with an 11-2 record, including a decisive 38-8 victory over Oregon in the Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl. In seasons following a bowl victory, the Cougars have averaged 9.4 wins.

Looking to avenge one of only two losses from last season, the Cougars will kick off the 2007 season on Sept. 1 in Provo against Arizona. The game will begin at 3:30 p.m. and will be broadcast nationally on Versus.

The 2007 edition of The Sporting News College Football Yearbook will hit newsstands on June 12.
