Fire tore through an Orem apartment early Wednesday morning, causing an estimated $50,000 in damage, authorities said.

The 35-year-old occupant of the apartment called police at about 3 a.m. after she smelled smoke and saw flames on her second-story balcony, said Orem police spokesman Lt. Douglas Edwards.

She and her 15-year-old son evacuated the apartment before firefighters arrived.

Fire crews responded to the scene at 361 E. 600 N., evacuating the remaining units in the apartment complex.

Firefighters contained the fire before it spread to neighboring units.

Authorities have not yet been able to determine the cause of the blaze, Edwards said.
