The American Cancer Society”s first walk for breast cancer in Utah will occur on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006, in Salt Lake City.

“Our goal is to get at least 2,000 [participants],” said Crista Casper, one of the event coordinators for American Cancer Society in Utah. “I”m really optimistic we”ll meet our goal.”

The walk will be 4.2 miles long – three laps around Liberty Park. T-shirts will be sold at the walk along with tribute cards to honor those who have struggled with this disease. All proceeds will go to breast cancer research and educational programs.

“With this walk, we can greatly raise the amount of research,” Casper said.

The walk has been around since 1993, but has not been conducted in Utah until this year.

“It was just an issue of making its way out west,” Casper said.

Past events have raised $194 million dollars and have included more than 3 million walkers.

Registration for the walk will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Liberty Park, 700 East and 1300 South, and the walk will start at 8:30 a.m.
