Pianists Jon Schmidt and Greg Simpson, along with several other artists, will perform in the WSC Ballroom this weekend as part of the BYUSA Annual Concert Series.

BYUSA spokesperson Chris Giovarelli said he encourages all students to attend the concerts.

“The BYUSA concerts are a great opportunity to have students on campus for entertainment.”

Students also look forward to these performances.

Patricia Auxier, an English literature and theory major from Chandler, Ariz., said Schmidt”s music has positively influenced her life.

“Jon Schmidt”s music is as if a diamond had glinted in the wilderness that is Provo,” she said. “He brings life and love to listeners” hearts at a time when life and love are not only deemed less valuable, but also unnecessary.”

Schmidt is famous in the LDS community for his uplifting music and sheepishly comedic performances. His music is featured on many Especially For Youth CDs, including the song “Waterfall.” Schmidt will perform with singer Neal Middleton; acoustic guitarist Jake White will open the show.

Out of all the audiences Schmidt has performed to, he said he prefers those at BYU for their inviting and friendly nature.

“BYU audiences are by far the warmest audience I play to,” Schmidt said. “There”s just something special about it. … People are nice. People say ”hi” to each other. That mood shows through in my performances to them.”

Like Schmidt, Simpson”s music is featured on numerous EFY CDs, such as the songs “Soul, Heart and Mind,” “Fullness of Time,” “Oh, Israel” and “Growing Young.” Singer Jenny Jordan Frogley, EFY singer of “These Are the Days” and “Stand in Holy Places,” will open Simpson”s set. Simpson will perform as guitarist and vocalist with his band Saturday.

Giovarelli said he hopes people who attend the concerts will leave the shows feeling happy and edified.

“We”re always seeking a positive environment with the BYUSA concerts, but we want everyone to be entertained while they”re here,” he said.

Jon Schmidt plays Friday; Greg Simpson plays Saturday. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the performances start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $6 with a student ID and $8 without. They are available at the WSC Information Desk or for $8 at the door. For more information call (801) 422-4313 or email .
