President Cecil O. Samuelson will give the keynote address on effective leadership Saturday as part of the University Student Council Conference hosted by BYUSA.

The theme of President Samuelson?s speech will be from King Benjamin in the Book of Mormon. The topic was chosen by executive BYUSA leaders and President Samuelson in a collaborative effort, based on the needs of the students.

?It is an opportunity for the president of the university to speak with student leaders on campus to help them understand the ways they can contribute to the mission and vision of BYU,? said Jared Chapman, assistant director of student leadership.

Student leaders who attend the conference will gain a personal invitation from President Samuelson on how to contribute to BYU, Chapman said.

At the conclusion of the conference, student leaders will have the opportunity to apply the principles of leadership given in President Samuelson?s address through group leadership applications.

The University Student Council Conference will provide a forum for student leaders to come together and discuss such topics as spiritual leadership and following the Savior, said Maria Viramontes, director of BYUSA presidential initiatives.

?We can become leaders as we follow the principles of Jesus Christ, such as serving those we work with and providing opportunities for spiritual and temporal growth, as well as encouraging development through service and leadership,? Viramontes said.
