The Cougars will host the UNLV Runnin? Rebels this weekend in what could be the most important series of the season.

The series opens tonight at 7 at Miller Park. Game 2 is Friday at 7 p.m., and the series finale starts at 1 p.m. Saturday.

After a tough series against New Mexico, second-place BYU is looking up at UNLV in the Mountain West Conference standings.

UNLV swept Air Force last weekend, propelling them into first place with a comfy two-game lead.

At two games back, the Cougars need to sweep UNLV to move back into first place. But BYU head coach Vance Law doesn?t want to focus too far out.

?I don?t want to talk about a sweep,? Law said. ?I just want to talk about this first at-bat in the first inning, then move on, do the same thing with Game 2 and so on.?

?We?re focusing on just concentrating on your specific task at hand. We need to not worry about results. Those will take care of themselves if you just focus on what you?re trying to do, whether it?s a particular pitch you?re trying to execute or your at-bat.?

During their series against New Mexico, BYU wasn?t able to execute the type of play they?ve been accustomed to this season. The Cougars, who are sixth in the nation in scoring, were held to a season-low one run in Friday?s 4-1 loss.

The Cougars hope to get back to their typical offensive form against UNLV.

?They have a good solid pitching staff, but they don?t really have anybody who can blow it by you,? Law said. ?I have confidence we can knock in a bunch of runs.?
