Gymnasts return for second home meet

Coming off a close loss against the No. 1 Utes last weekend, the women?s gymnastics team returns to Provo for its second home meet against Southern Utah University tonight at 7 p.m. in the Smith Fieldhouse.

Both teams met earlier this year when the No. 11 Cougars defeated the No. 15 Thunderbirds 195.725-192.575.

?The last time we met, our team didn?t look prepared cause it was the first meet of the season,? SUU head coach Brad Baumann said. ?Hopefully, this time we?ll be stronger and more powerful. BYU brings out a very good Southern team, and we bring out the best in BYU. If we both hit very well, the difference in scores will be three or four tenths.?

BYU?s in-state rival is currently 3-3 and is still looking for its first road win.

The Cougars, on the other hand, are 7-2, losing only to Oklahoma at the season opener and coming short against Utah last week.

In Salt Lake City, the BYU squad obtained some of their lowest scores this season, including their second lowest total score.

Co-captain Jaime Mabray came in fifth as best BYU all-around competitor with 38.6. Senior Kirsten Pauga and freshman Alethea Boon tied for fourth (9.825) on vault, and senior Genevieve Claveau came in seventh as best Cougar on bars (9.8).

Sophomore Kacie Capra tied for fourth (9.75) on beam with Utah?s Rachel Tidd, and Mabray scored fourth (9.85) on floor.

Both teams will compete again March 19th for the third time in Cedar City.
