Golf goes to West Regional

    The BYU women”s golf team begins competition today in the NCAA West Regional at Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif.

    The Cougars will look to junior Margaret Gibby, who finished fourth individually at the Mountain West Conference tournament two weeks ago. The three Newren sisters-senior Nicole Newren Chandler, junior Natalie and freshman Rachel-will also be looked at to contribute solid, consistent play. The Cougars are also hoping for another strong performance from freshman Alexis Edwards, who is powerful off the tee.

    The three-day event comprises twenty-one teams, with BYU coming in as the 15th seed. The Cougars are coming off of the their best performance of the season at the Mountain West Conference Golf Championship, finishing third.

    BYU has shown consistency in recent years, being invited to the West Regional four out of the last five seasons. However, they have yet to advance to the national tournament.

    The top eight teams and the two top individuals in the region will advance to the NCAA championships, held at the Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Ala.
