The Provo City Arts Council is sponsoring “First Fridays Downtown” where Provo residents can visit local galleries, meet artists and observe nationally acclaimed art for free today from 6 to 8 p.m.

“The idea behind the gallery stroll is to bring people downtown and offer galleries an opportunity to showcase local artists,” said Kathryn Allen of the Provo Arts Council.

There will be six galleries participating in the gallery stroll, all located near Center Street in Provo.

Window Box Gallery, 62 W. Center, is featuring art by famous artist James Christensen, known for his fantasy paintings

“I”m able to sell all of his new stuff where a lot of other galleries can”t,” said Judy Harding, gallery dealer.

The Window Box Gallery is also displaying art by Bev Doolittle, Greg Olsen and Liz Lemon Swindle.

The Terra Nova Gallery, 41 W. 300 N., is displaying recent works from Brett Larsen. Larsen will be in attendance in the gallery. Larsen”s paintings focus on the idea of paradise and the longing for it that so many people have.

“A beautiful painting can open our eyes to the world, reminding us that it too has been composed and does influence us,” Larsen said. “It allows us to see with the eyes of a child.”

Other galleries participating are the Provo City Library at Academy Square, Provo Arts Center, 425 W. Center, Freedom Gallery, 225 W. Center and Cats Cradle, 168 W. Center.

The galleries in Provo are impressive and expand the beauty in Provo, but if that isn”t appealing enough, the galleries also offer refreshments.

Following the gallery stroll, there will be a concert at 8 p.m. at the Provo Arts Center. The concert will feature “Octapella,” an a cappella singing group. The admission for the concert is $2 per person and $10 for families.
