Lauren Richards was named Mountain West Conference Co-Player of the Week on Monday Sept. 15, 2003 after leading BYU to a 3-0 record in the Mizuno Classic over the weekend.

“Sweet, that”s rad. I had no idea,” said a humble Richards when she found out about her honor.

The 6-foot sophomore setter from Orem played excellent in last week”s Mizuno Classic, helping BYU sweep the tournament and upset top teams (No. 11 Penn State, No. 25 Ohio State).

“She deserves it,” said coach Karen Lamb. “She”s very aggressive, and her serving added a huge boost to our team.”

In the win over Penn State, Richards played her best game. She ended up with 55 assists, 11 digs and a personal best with six blocks.

For the week, Richards averaged 11.38 assists, 2.31 digs, 1.62 kills, 1.15 blocks and .54 aces per game.

Lamb also said that Richards has improved in leaps and bounds and will continue to look for success.

Richards joins Carrie Bowers as another MWC Player of the week. Lamb said even though these girls played well and received honors, it”s the team that deserves the credit.

The Cougars are 7-3 and play cross-town rival UVSC Friday Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m. and then play Nevada Saturday Sept. 20 at 3:00 p.m. Both games will be at home.
