9/17 Editorial: Making it better

Last week the opinion page was full of letters about the behavior of the BYU fans at the BYU/Georgia Tech game. I wasn’t at the game so I don’t know exactly what happened, but if a few arrests were made because of fans being aggressive towards the referees, I’d say that we have some apologizing to do.

I was especially saddened by the article about the referee that had been investigating the church but no longer has any desire to do so because of our fans’ actions.

What if they could get an apology from all of us? I know most of the people who are reading this letter are not to blame for the bad things that happened, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t all responsible for fixing the problem. I have set up a web site at http://www.byu.edu/~pa/georgiatech/ where anyone who wishes to sign their name to an apology can do so. This takes almost no time but I think if we got thousands of signatures it would go a long way to repair relations with those that we have wronged. Please go to the site and sign the apology as soon as possible since I would like to send it within a week of the printing of this letter.

I am putting my name on it because if I am honest with myself I would have to admit that I probably would have been booing the refs along with everyone else if I had been at the game. I think we can make a difference.
