One man is dead after a shooting in Orem around 9 a.m. on Jan. 18.

Two Orem police officers responded to a call about a suspicious man in the area. Officer Jim Flygare was the first on the scene.

“When the officer approached the suspect, he got in a blue pick up truck and began to drive up on the lawn,” Lt. Doug Edwards said. “The suspect came back to the same spot that he left in the truck and starting running on foot.” Officer Flygare started chasing the suspect on foot.

When the second police officer, Ralph Crabb, got to the scene he started chasing the suspect on foot also, in a different direction.

It was at 50 West and 800 No. that the suspect pulled out a small caliber hand gun and shot Flygare in the left shoulder.

Flygare was still able to shoot the suspect once in the chest.

The suspect was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.

“The suspect was driving a stolen vehicle,” Edwards said.

“The suspect is an adult male Hispanic in his 20s,” Edwards said. But the name of the man is not being released at this time.
