Dr. Kristine Hansen, associate dean of General Education and Honors, spoke on the importance of the aims of a BYU education at the devotional on Tuesday, July 3.

The four aims, “Enlarge the Intellect,” “Strengthen the Spirit,” “Build Character,” and “Prepare for Lifelong Learning and Service,” will prepare students for eternity, Hansen said.

“To me, each of these aims is like a mountain peak. . . that we are invited not only to look at, but to climb,” she said.

Students can build character by obeying the Honor Code and by keeping commitments they make with others, she said. By constantly making good decisions, students can “forge a sterling character in the fire of adversity,” she said.

Hansen reiterated the necessity of General Education requirements at BYU. She quoted Albert Einstein and Brigham Young to show how a broad-based education helps the University develop students of character and personality.

She also counseled students to find service opportunities by accepting callings in their wards and stakes and by taking a service-learning course on campus.

“Those who are privileged to enter to learn at BYU have an obligation to then go forth and serve,” Hansen said.
